After his parents passed away, Eugene ceased farming, moved to Box Elder, and had land interests in Missouri and Oklahoma. He then moved to Thermopolis, Wyo., where he lived for the remainder of his life.

On September 2, 2023, Eugene was diagnosed with a rapidly progressing cancer, and he passed away on September 6, 2023.
